# Importing CSV Data to Literatu

Assumes you have CSV files ready to import. Supported CSV file formats include Microsoft School Data Sync, OneSchool and Literatu CSV format.

When data is imported into Literatu for the first time, we create new entries for classes, teachers and students. Subsequent imports will create any new classes or user accounts and update class memberships for existing accounts. 

To import your class, student and teacher data to Literatu using CSV files, follow these instructions or watch the video following: 

1. Open a web browser and go to [www.literatu.com](http://www.literatu.com).
2. Login with your community administrator account.
3. Click the hamburger menu at the top left of the screen, and select Manage -> Import school data.
4. On the import screen, either drag-and-drop your file(s) onto the upload frame, or click ‘Browse files’ to locate them. 
5. Click Next to proceed. The importer will validate your file(s). If any issues are encountered, you will see a message and the import will not proceed. 
6. If the format is OK you will see a summary & detailed view of the data we are about to import. Please check this screen and make sure the information is correct. You can cancel at this point if needed. 
7. Click ‘Import data’ to start the import. 
8. You will see a confirmation when done.

If your files fail the validation step, please check and make sure they match the formats specified. The most common issues are:

* Incorrect file format. Please make sure you are providing the file format (e.g. CSV,  XLS) as specified on the screen.
* Changes to column names. Column names should not be edited.
* Missing / extra columns. Please don't remove any columns or add extra columns. &#x20;
* Missing or incorrect data. Please make sure your import sheet isn't missing data, and that students and teachers have email addresses. Accounts with blank email fields can not be added. Please also ensure there is a default password in the password fields, even if you will be logging in with  &#x20;
