# Create an Activity

Writing Activities are set up by Teachers

{% hint style="success" %}
This section describes how to create a Writing Activity in Scribo. An Activity is a writing task or prompt to get students writing.

Students can write in Google Docs, O365 or Scribo direct. It doesn't matter where they write, as long as they do.
{% endhint %}

## Two ways to Create a Writing Activity

1. A [Google Activity](/student-interaction/create-an-activity.md#quick-activity) – create an Activity and assign it to your Google Classroom
2. A Scribo [web based Activity](/student-interaction/create-an-activity.md#create-a-guided-activity) – with an interactive Scaffold to support student writing

{% hint style="info" %}
If you are using Google Classroom and want all Activities to be shown in Google Classroom, you MUST create an Activity via the Scribo Add-on. The security features of Google insist that you be in Google to update Google. \
\
If a student starts an Activity in Google Docs, all edits must be done in Google Docs.
{% endhint %}

### Google Activity

From the Scribo Add-on Panel in Google Docs, select Add New Activity

| Entry                            | Description                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         |
| -------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Name | Give the Activity a Name, eg Creative Writing Term 2, Week 3. |
| Writing Prompt | Give students a great question or prompt to write about. |
| Stimulus Material | Add as much stimulus material as you like. Images and video are all supported. |
| Keywords | List the keywords to use when answering the question. Separate keywords with a comma eg : holiday, beach, sun |
| Min Words and Paragraphs | Set a Word and Paragraph target. |
| Can Students do a Writing Check? | This either allows students to check their writing with Scribo or not. If this is a test, you can stop writing check being used. If you say YES, you can decide if you want keywords to show in the Writing Check. |
| Show Keywords | Do you want to show keywords in the Writing Check? This might tip students off to what you are looking for. Leave this out in a test environment. |
| Writing Features | These are the levels of writing analysis that Scribo reports on. These can be turned off if you don't want students to access certain types of feedback. De-selecting these will stop the section showing in Student Writing Check. |
| Assign to Classes | You can Assign the Activity to one or more Classes. Linked Google Classes have a Classroom icon. The Activity will be assigned to all students in the class. |
| Year and Subject | Enter the Year and Subject. Year will alter the feedback level. |
| Due Date | Select the date the Activity is Due. |
| **Create** | Create the Activity. If you have assigned the Activity to a Google Classroom, the Activity will be created in Google Classroom. Classroom will activate the email notifications and grant access to students to start the Activity using Classroom. |

### Web Based Activity

Guided Activities are created by teachers in the Scribo web application. Click the Scribo logo in the top left of the Scribo Add-on or enter via [www.literatu.com](http://www.literatu.com) with your Teacher account.

![This link will open Scribo full web functionality. Select Activities from the top menu.](https://770445871-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-legacy-files/o/assets%2F-LulEkwN7sc6BT53G0R8%2F-Lv2oY9ROVsWkz5m66VT%2F-Lv2qEjfSb8gRkGRxUhV%2Fscribo%20link.png?alt=media\&token=20b29a44-48e2-45bd-abf3-c962a2bdf9fb)

A Scribo Web Activity also includes a writing scaffold that can include videos, images, any level of metacognitive prompts, clear expectations or simply a longer format writing prompt. The scaffold can be opened alongside where students are writing, making it a live prompt.

In Google, Students open the writing scaffold with the View Topic button on the bottom of the Student Add on panel.

#### Additional Fields in Guided Activity

| Entry                     | Description                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            |
| ------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Stimulus | A fully open HTML editor into which you can upload images, and link videos and text. This is where you can build scaffolds, notes, guides, writing prompts and other information to get writing going and guide where it heads. |
| Curriculum Word List | Scribo holds word lists for certain subjects. These can be linked. We can also load word lists that are particular to a subject or curriculum. |
| Practice or Assessment | You choose. This impacts on writing analysis data as we separate the two modes. |
| Type of Writing | Choose one. These impact on the new Styles section that looks for all kinds of writing traits. For example, when the question is Compare and Contrast, Scribo will look for compare and contrast language moves. We call these Rhetorical moves and they involve word choice and usage to drive the style of response. |
| Writing Level | Choose one. This will drive the level of feedback that is delivered. |
| Writing Feedback Features | Teachers can turn off feedback that might be too much for younger cohorts or distracting for others. Maybe a Year 3 class would not see Readability, for example. |

#### Choose Students to Assign Activity to.

New in Jan 2020 is the ability to assign Scribo Activities to selected students and manage the assignment to students process.
