# Lesson 1: Upload a Past Assignment

## Getting Started

### Lesson 1: Upload a Past Assignment

If you have access to a class set of texts on one assignment, a great first thing to do is to let Scribo work its analytical magic. By using a set of already completed texts, you can explore what Scribo finds without involving students and taking any class time.

**Background:** This lesson assumes that you can access a class set of student writing on a specific topic. You might have access to a Google Drive, a Microsoft OneDrive or an online or network dropbox where student writings are loaded when they are turned in. Scribo supports all these sources as well as files in text, Word or PDF formats.

## Step-by-Step

### **1. Find More Than 10 texts on the Same Topic**

Make sure you can locate a set of tests on **one** topic (task or assignment). The reason a set of texts on one topic is important is because Scribo compares all the texts, and if they are from different assignments they will differ too much to make useful comparisons. For example, comparing narratives, poetry and analytical essays might be interesting, but few common insights could be provided at the word, sentence and paragraph levels.

Also, to see what Scribo provides you as a classroom teacher, a “class set” of texts is most useful. This means that you will gain the most insights from more than a few texts. Thus, if you can find more than 10 digital texts on the same writing task, you are ready.

**Note** – this could well be the only time you use this “Teacher Upload” approach, because all Scribo knows about are the texts, not who wrote them. That’s why the best approach when using Scribo is to create activities where “Students will use Scribo.” This way, each time students submit a writing to Scribo, all the data analytics and your feedback get linked back to each student's account. As much as Scribo is your writing assistant, it is, of course, a learning analytics engine that provides you and students with rich insights into writing skills, trends and growth. So get ready for Lesson 3 where you create a first activity to use with students.

### **2. Click on “Add New Activity” and choose “I Will Upload Texts”**

### **3. Fill in the Details on the Set Up Screen**

This is fairly self-explanatory. Notice also, that like most of the screens in Scribo (and Literatu), that a Question Mark icon shows that help is available for the particular screen you’re on.

![](https://770445871-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-legacy-files/o/assets%2Fscribo%2F-LzoW-imBuCbIcBWdfXc%2F-LzoWGFISzmzoOd_H3ti%2F1.gif?generation=1580355360671799\&alt=media)

So if you need help filling in the Set-up fields, click on the Help icon:

![](https://770445871-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-legacy-files/o/assets%2Fscribo%2F-LzoW-imBuCbIcBWdfXc%2F-LzoWGFJ3gw5sBshh5x-%2F2.png?generation=1580355360759885\&alt=media)

Because we are setting up this activity for you to upload the students’ texts, they won’t be seeing the Prompt or Stimulus so there is no need to fill in those fields.

### **4. Click the Next Button**

and watch for excitement to begin!

### **5. Upload your Texts**

![](https://770445871-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-legacy-files/o/assets%2Fscribo%2F-LzoW-imBuCbIcBWdfXc%2F-LzoWGFKXmWIFbepZpox%2F3.png?generation=1580355360683732\&alt=media)

You can drag files from a folder on your desktop or browse the files from any location or Google Drive. Once the files are listed, click the Upload Files button.

Scribo will have a full set of analytics and student work samples within minutes!

### **6. Launch the Scribo Report**

When Scribo has finished processing the students' texts, the “Status” field will show a check or tick. Click the Report icon in the right side panel to launch it.

Immediately Scribo provides you with a rich set of insights and work samples from the cohort’s texts. The best way to think of this screen is like this:

After collecting all the students texts, you sit down to read them. As you go through each text, you notice things and provide feedback. Sometimes you see the same issue or attribute repeated in enough of the students’ work to make note of this so that when you return to class you can address this common skill gap. The targeted skill gap might range from small grammatical things like the proper use of semicolons to more engaging ways to start the paper or make an argument. This separate sheet of “teachable moments” is EXACTLY what Scribo has just given you. ***And you haven’t read a single paper!***

Watch this animation that shows the long scrolling page of what Scribo provides and how you can navigate the page using the radar chart at the top left.

### **7. See What Scribo Finds for You**

Scribo runs more than 30 different analyses of each text in the cohort to find insights at the word, sentence and paragraph levels. Here is a video describing ways a teacher could use Scribo. Watch the video if you like or carry on to the next step to explore for yourself.

Click the video above this [link to watch](https://vimeo.com/270574032/58e20a4a00) some ways a teacher could use Scribo to analyse and improve student writing at the word, sentence and paragraph levels.

### **8. Explore Your Teachable Moments**

The video above shows a few ways you could use Scribo for targeted teaching. The best ways for you to use Scribo’s Infographics and Resources page are the ways *you* see most useful. Scribo is your assistant and can be used in an infinite number of ways so get playful, click a lot of buttons and see what best supports your goals and approaches for helping students improve their writing.

Once you’ve had a good look around and a bit of a play, consider [**sharing your ideas**](https://goo.gl/forms/QgEVBJtw0McbrmTj2) about how you might use the Scribo insights.
